Floating Shelf Installation: Best Practices
It’s not hard to see the appeal of minimalist floating shelves miraculously self-supporting in all of their glory. The challenge is they can be deceivingly difficult to install - even for someone who would consider themself to be fairly handy. Proper installation is crucial to maintaining the floating shelf aesthetic, not to mention preventing damage to your home and belongings. Here's what you need to know:
Plan Ahead: The first step to any project should be taking a lot of measurements, and really trying to visualize what you want the final result to look like. You can use painters tape on the walls as a visual aid to determine spacing etc.
Find the Studs: Use a stud finder to locate wooden studs to support for your brackets. Be aware that walls contain pipes and wires as well as studs, and a misplaced hole can result in a fire or flood. If in doubt, consult a professional installer, and make sure they have their own insurance policy (which is always a good idea).
Choose the Right Brackets: Select brackets rated for the shelf's weight, and suited to your wall system. Not all brackets work with all shelves either, so make sure you’ve considered factors like shelf depth and thickness.
Use Anchors Strategically: While mounting directly to wall studs is best, high-quality drywall anchors like toggle bolts can be used if no studs are available. Bear in mind the use of your shelf when determining the type of support you need. A drywall anchor may be suitable for a decorative shelf, but they’re generally not a good idea for more functional applications.
Keep things level: A level is an essential tool for floating shelf installations. For short shelves, a small level will do the trick. For longer shelves and larger installations, a laser level may be your best bet. Also, make sure all brackets are level as you install them.
Safety First: Wear safety glasses and gloves when using power tools.
Remember: Consult a professional if unsure about any aspect of the installation. By following these key practices, you can create beautiful and secure floating shelves that last.
